Adapting Instruction for Individual Needs

The teacher understands how pupils differ in their approaches to learning and the barriers that impede learning and can adapt instruction to meet the diverse needs of pupils, including those with disabilities and exceptionalities.

Rationale 3: The purpose of this unit is to differentiate for all learners, utilize technology to promote a deeper understanding of the material, and to utilize background knowledge of the students. To learn about the formation of diamonds and tying it into their own backyard will provide a strong connection and learning base for students to expand upon.

KSD:

3.K.5 The teacher has a well-grounded framework for understanding cultural and community diversity and knows how to learn about and incorporate students’ experiences, cultures, and community resources into instruction.

Websites pertaining to the diamond mine display connections between the community which in turn incorporate student experience and background knowledge. It is important for students to be global-thinkers. Take what they already know and expand upon that, creating children who think analytically and globally.

3.S.6 The teacher seeks to understand students’ families, cultures, and communities, and uses this information as a basis for connecting instruction to student experiences (e.g. drawing explicit connections between subject matter and community matters, making assignments that can be related to students’ experiences and cultures).

Students learn about volcanoes and where they are located. A connection is made between diamonds and volcanoes. Students will learn how diamonds were made in their state’s diamond mine, and will compare it to other diamonds mines throughout the world.

3.D.1 The teacher believes that all children can learn at high levels and persists in helping all children achieve success.

With the variety of activities this unit entails, it is evident that all children’s needs are met. Learning objectives, web resources, discussions, and short quizzes assist in the success of students. They are given multiple ways of learning the material and multiple ways of showcasing their knowledge of the newly-learned material. Students will answer discussion questions according to the various levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy. Due to the online nature of this unit, students will be able to move at their own pace, review when necessary, and assess their understanding.
